A campaign against the New Israel Fund -- a U.S.-based organization that funds civil society activists in Israel -- has sparked a fierce debate over the limits of free speech, the financing of NGOs, the dictates of loyalty to the state and, ultimately, over the fundamental values of Israel's Zionist democracy.

Israel has erected a state-of-the art field hospital in Haiti hours after a devastating earthquake shook the island nation. The hospital has been credited with saving scores of Haitian lives and has delivered the first baby born to an earthquake victim.

However, the United Nations considers the Israeli Field Hospital an "illegal outpost".

Let us not forget in the wake of Martha Coakley's defeat that there is a reason why we are, or should be, Democrats. Not "independents." Democrats. I write from the perspective of an American Jew, but many Americans of all ethnicities and religions share the values that make them Democrats and that make this country great.
